Greenwood School Board Discusses Head Football Coach and More

The Greenwood School Board discussed the head football coach at their recent meeting.
One board member motioned to approve hiring Chris Lindner as the 2024-25 Co-op Head Coach, which was recommended by the Joint Hiring Committee. However, no second was received, so the motion died. The Board then approved to table the hiring of the 2024-25 Co-op Head Coach position until next month, which was approved.
The Board also approved Hannah Olson the Co-op Cross Country Head Coach for the 2023-24 school year. The Board also approved the Memorandum of Understanding for the School Counselor. The Board also approved changing the July meeting to July 24th.
The Board approved the 2023-24 WIAA Membership. Elementary Principal Shane Lilly presented the Achievement Gap Reduction Report. Mr. Lilly discussed strategies for improvement and interventions that have been implemented. They are making good strides but may take a while. Looking towards new programs to help narrow this gap. The Board approved the Memorandum of Understanding with Children's of Wisconsin.
District Administrator Joe Green shared that Loyal and Greenwood directors have meet and a recommendation was made to co-op the One-Act Play for the 2023-24 season. Discussions were held on location of practices, and performances.
A July 13th, parent meeting would be planned to meet with students and parents and share the expectations and commitment required for the one-act play competition if co-op program is approved. The Board approved the co-op of the One-Act Play with Loyal School District with both districts having a co-director.
The Board also approved the Project Life 6603 Agreement. The Board also approved the kitchen updates. Also, Mr. Green was presented with a potential Solar Panel project. Board directed Mr. Green to further look into this project and bring it back to the board.
Summer projects are underway as presented to the board, but there was a request from the board on what to do with the east gym bleacher boards. The 2022-23 Budget Transfers will be tabled until the July meeting and the 2022-23 Budget Update was tabled until the July meeting.
The Board approved the 2023-24 School Breakfast & Lunch Prices and tabled the Pupil Transportation Contract. The Board approved Lauterbach & Amen, LLP as Audit services for three years as presented for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 school years.
The District Firewall upgrade was not discussed at this meeting. The Board also approved raising the sub pay for the 2023-24 year from $115 to $125 per day. The Board heard the Health Insurance Update. There will be a $60,000 savings for the district.
The Board also approved the CESA Special Education Billing Package and the Wisconsin Rural School Alliance membership. A staffing update was shared. They Approved 2023-24 Co-curricular contracts for Penny Wehrs for MS Volleyball, Carey Bryhn for Elementary Recreation, and Jo Elmer as the One-Act Play Coach.
The Board also approved Abigail Magnuson as the 1st Grade Teacher, Amanda Kosar as the 3rd Grade Teacher, and Madeline Raese as the School Counselor. The Board also approved Amy Achtner, Bernard Bock, and Dustin Shaner as volunteers. The Board also approved the resignations of Amanda Schlough as the Assistant Track and Field Coach and Marixa Wepfer as the 6-12 Band and 7-12 Choir Instructor.
The Board also heard the Administrators’ Reports. Elementary Principal Lilly reported that:
- Summer school including Hunter Safety, ATV Safety, Snowmobile Safety, Tractor Safety and summer field trip to Minnesota Museum was held on June 21st;
- ARC training with Loyal and Owen-Withee school districts has been completed;
- New Staff welcomed and building improvement updates were shared;
- Volleyball class being held this week with invitation to Loyal School district extended;
- Learning new software (Educlimber and Fastbridge) this summer;
- EPEC (Elementary, Parents, Educators, & Community - first meeting July 19 at 6 pm.
Dean of Students and Athletic Director Jenny Mayenschein reported:
- Renaya Horvath, 9th grader, qualified for State Track & Field this spring and finished 2nd in shot put, a 1ST in 100 m.
District Administrator and Middle High School Principal Joe Green reported:
The Governor signed the biennium budget. Revenue limit will be moved from $10,000 to $11,000 per student. There will be a per pupil increase of $325 per student in each year of the budget (for 2 years). Special education funding was increased from 30% to 33.3%, or 1/3 funding. Voucher program funds were increased significantly;
Baird Study - A forecast timeline study will be put together, with recommendation to present a referendum question on the April 2, 2024, ballot to begin the referendum funding in 2025. Initial study data was shared with board with forecast of revenue and mill rate projections. Baird will do presentation to the board and community. Will need to discuss timeline in the next few months;
Listening Sessions - Thank you shared and continuing sessions recommended as they move forward.
High Reliability Schools – A group of 12 Greenwood staff will be traveling to lowa July 9-12, where they will be learning about the process to change the District's culture and become a more collaborative staff and district focused on student achievement. Loyal will also be sending a team. July or August Board meeting group will be invited to share information learned and plan on moving momentum forward;
Pre-ACT Update - All 9-10 graders will take this test this coming year;
NAEP - Our 8th graders have been chosen to take the NAEP test in reading & math (federal government selects schools) during January 29 March 8 window. More updates to follow.
Board Member Jamie Gardner reported on the CESA 10 board Meeting. Presentation by the operation department was given on what they do at CESA 10. No meeting in July.
Joint Board Committee, Loyal District Administrator Chris Lindner shared that feedback from the recent listening session was discussed at joint mtg. Communication is the difficult part and what they will focus on. Scheduling similarities shared.
Newsletter and websites to be used for sharing information. Policies were discussed along with handbooks being compared and aligned. Direction and timelines of athletics discussed. Nothing to present to the board at this time.
Green indicated that conversations between coaches has begun with coop program recommendations being brought to the July board meeting. Only sports eligible for 2023-24 season timeline would be junior high programs. Board Member Jerome Krempasky discussed having joint newsletters and/or town meetings.
Green shared agenda from the first joint board committee meetings along with updated on where they are in with those agenda items and discussions/sharing at this time. Lindner mentioned that a letter was shared at the start of the joint board meetings to let the district know that discussions on sharing resources between the districts would be taking place.
Green indicated that approach was that If there is a need, we (each district) need to be able to help fill that, and that empathy is highlighted for reason, not because it would benefit us only (either district).
