ATC: MORE POWER LINES NEEDED

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 -- 3:01 PM

The state's need for new and refurbished power lines will not stop despite a new power line from Duluth, Minnesota to Wausau that's set to start in March.

That's according to a new assessment by Pewaukee-based American Transmission Company.

Their 10-year plan recently released shows that the transmission utility has spent $1.6 billion in recent years, but sees a need to spend $2.8 billion more over the coming decade.

ATC, formed in 2001, inherited a network of power lines from eastern Wisconsin utilities that had failed to invest in upgrading their transmission systems during the 1990s.

The company has worked in recent years to catch up, but Wisconsin still has far fewer connections to other states than do Illinois and Minnesota.

That means the industry deems Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula \"narrowly constrained.
