Proposed Legislation Protecting Pollinators Introduced
Thursday, June 22nd, 2023 -- 8:05 AM
(Alisa Nelson, WRN) A proposal in the state legislature looks to protect pollinators.
The bipartisan package of bills introduced Tuesday would address habitat and pesticide use, which are stated as two of the most common causes of the population decline of pollinators. Appleton Representative Lee Snodgrass points to data that shows that, without pollinators, Wisconsin would lose three-quarters of its cranberry crops, 60% of its cherry crops, and 80% of its apple crops.
One of the proposals in the package would name the rusty-patched bumble bee as the state native insect. Wisconsin is one of 19 states that don’t have existing laws protecting pollinators.
