(Mike Leischner, WSAU) With a few strokes of the pen Wisconsin's new shared revenue deal is officially a law, the first five percent of all state sales tax revenues will now be reserved for distribution to counties and municipalities, according to Mike Leischner with WSAU.
"It's a great day for Wisconsin. A nice bipartisan win for folks." Once Tuesday's celebration dies down lawmakers have more work to do, as the state budget is still in the oven. "It has not been signed and hasn't been approved by the legislature, but, once that's done, I feel confident we'll be in a good place to implement this."
Evers says concessions were made on both sides. "I think on both sides. I mean, obviously, the amount of money was an issue. Obvisouly, the folks from the City of Milwaukee are dealing with some really difficult things."
Everyone who spoke at Tuesday's signing called the bill a historic piece of bipartisan legislation- Department of Revenue Secretary Peter Barca added that it's especially big for the city of Milwaukee which had been teetering on bankruptcy.
He went on to say other municipalities have been as well- though he didn't name them.
