Wausau's Human Resources Committee Considering Communications Officer Position

Monday, June 12th, 2023 -- 8:39 AM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) Wausau's Human Resources Committee is going to consider a measure that would create a new Communications Officer position within the city.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Mayor Katie Rosenberg says it can be a struggle to keep up with media requests, both from local media like WSAU and outside reporters.

"During COVID, I largely could do a lot of communicating, but the expectations are a little bit different now. We have media reaching out all the time to react to a variety of things and I can't get to it."

"Your medium is a little bit different because it's radio. The expectation is that you have voices. But there are other media outlets that regularly reach out via email and they want the response via email. And it's really hard for me to sit down and right that response."

She says it's also about building trust with the community by making sure the city's message is clear and concise. "Assemble a team to quickly respond to questions and concerns. I think that's what I'm looking for mostly, so marketing yes. Love it. Want it. But largely I really need someone to get the facts out."

According to the job description, the right candidate would also be able to help maintain the city's website and proof all city communications. Logistical duties for all city media events would also be included. The proposed position comes with a salary starting at over 56 thousand, five hundred dollars.
