Abbotsford Man Appears in Court for Stabbing that Occurred at Marathon County Tavern

Wednesday, June 7th, 2023 -- 2:01 PM

An Abbotsford man appeared in Marathon County Court on Tuesday for a stabbing that occurred at a Marathon County tavern.

Back in January, authorities received a call of a stabbing outside Perla’s Place Bar and Grill in the Village of Unity. When authorities arrived, they found a man inside the tavern with blood on his face and the left side of his abdomen. The owner of the tavern said they had found the man like that outside.

He had two cuts on his abdomen and one on his cheek. As officers were talking with the injured man, they noticed two people come out of the restroom. One of them had blood on his hand and a cut on his finger. He was identified as Leovigildo Hernandez.

The victim stated he was at the bar with his cousin when Hernandez arrived. They began talking as they were from the same small town in Mexico. The victim also stated he had borrowed $600 from Hernandez and paid back all but $50.

The victim stated he didn’t remember what happened outside the bar, but suspect Hernandez stabbed him. A witness said he was leaving the tavern when he saw Hernanez talking with the victim. The witness was going to give the victim a ride home.

When he got into his vehicle, people were running in the parking lot and the victim was lying on the ground. Hernandez stood in front of a car that was trying to leave, but the car went around him, leaving him in the parking lot. Hernandez is facing a charge of 1st degree attempted homicide.

During his arraignment on Tuesday, he entered a not guilty plea to the charge against him. He’s scheduled to back in court June 21st. If convicted, Hernandez faces a maximum sentence of 60 years in prison and he remains in jail pending a $250,000 cash bail.
