National AbrAbility Project Helping Disabled Farmers

Thursday, June 1st, 2023 -- 9:00 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) The National AgrAbility Project has been a crucial source of education, technical assistance, and support for farmers and ranchers with disabilities for over three decades.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, in recognition of the challenges faced by military veterans transitioning into civilian life, AgrAbility extends its services to veterans interested in pursuing farming and other agricultural careers.

AgrAbility collaborates with the Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC) to empower veterans by providing them with renewed purpose on American farms. The FVC offers initiatives such as annual equipment grants, the Homegrown By Heroes branding label, and conferences to equip veterans with resources to enhance their farming pursuits.

Over half of the FVC's membership is composed of veterans with service-related disabilities, so AgrAbility works closely with the coalition to provide comprehensive support to these farmer veterans.

Additionally, the USDA's Veteran's Affairs pilot program for Food and Agriculture Rehabilitation and Employment Support (VA FARMS) plays a vital role in offering therapeutic and supported employment services for veterans.

Collaborating with community organizations, VA FARMS provides high-quality education, on-the-job training, therapeutic interventions, and holistic healthcare to support veterans in their agricultural endeavors.

At a recent conference, representatives from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection's Farm Center highlighted their commitment to assisting veterans. The Farm Center offers valuable resources, guidance in developing business plans, and a distinct logo for veteran farmers to use on their agricultural products.

The logo combines the Home Grown by Heroes and Something Special logos from Wisconsin.
