NEW CHALET WILL GREET BRUCE MOUND VISITORS
Tuesday, December 4th, 2007 -- 8:36 AM
A nice blanket of snow isn't the only thing that's new at Bruce Mound this year. Skiiers, tubers and snowboarders will also be warming up in a brand new chalet. The building is the latest example of private-public partnership at the Clark County-run facility. Keith Miatke of Neillsville is the Vice Chairman of the Friends of Bruce Mound, a group of area residents that organized a few years ago.
"(We) started about three years ago. We have about 60 members. We're a non-profit group," Miatke explains. "We're there to enhance what's already there. We want to make it better for the public."
The group was instrumental in raising the hundreds-of-thousands of dollars needed to fund the chalet construction.
The old one, which has been torn down, had some obvious drawbacks. Visitors would have to make the dangerous treck up stairs just to get into the hall.
"It's all in one floor. It's about 7,500 square feet. It has a fireplace and the ski shop is right in the main building. It's beautiful inside," Miatke raves.
Bruce Mound is scheduled to open December 14th, and Miatke says the new building should be ready to go.
"There's some work to be done, but they're finishing up. The county crews are busy making snow, but when they're waiting for the guns to be moved, they're working in the ski shop, moving equipment and getting ready."
