CLARK CO. 3RD HIGHEST DEER HARVEST IN STATE
Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 -- 11:33 AM
Clark County hunters bagged more deer this year than in almost any other county, but the overall harvest here was down around 6% from last year.According to preliminary numbers from the Wisconsin DNR, hunters here shot 10,685 deer during the 9-day season, which concluded Sunday.
That's good for third best in the state behind Marathon, where 10,723 deer were harvested, and Waupaca County, where 12,204 were taken.
But there were 641 fewer deer harvested in Clark County compared to the 2006 hunt, a decrease of 6-percent.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reported that hunters registered 343,644 deer from the 9-day hunt - up 2% from a year ago.
The DNR said Tuesday that hunters registered 218,584 antlerless deer and 125,060 bucks.
Killing antlerless deer is key to checking the growth of the overpopulated herd because it means the number of does is being reduced.
But DNR deer ecologist Keith Warnke says it is too early to evaluate how the kill will impact individual management units.
The DNR estimates up to 1.8 million whitetail deer roamed the fields and woods this fall.
