The Marshfield Planning Commission held a meeting Tuesday evening and discussed the proposed chickens ordinance.

There were some in attendance at the meeting and most spoke in favor of the ordinance. The City also had an online survey available for residents to comment on. The City received 3,135 responses to the survey.

A majority of respondents were in favor with 55% who filled out the survey saying they wanted to house chickens. 40% said they didn’t want to house chickens. If the ordinance were approved, some of the top concerns respondents said should be addressed in the ordinance include the number of chickens (78%), cleanliness (75%), and hens only (67%).

Finally, 60% of respondents said they were fine with their neighbors having chickens and 40% said they weren’t. In the end, the Commission did approve to take the next steps with the chickens ordinance (4 yes and 1 no), but the next step will have it come back to the Planning Commission to look closer at the ordinance and potentially remove or add items to the ordinance before sending it to the Common Council for final approval.

The Commission also heard from Benjamin Austin, the developer looking to build Hole in One Mini Golf on an L-shaped lot at 1901 South Central Avenue. Besides the mini-golf course, they’re looking to build a clubhouse for admissions and concessions as well as a patio for customers to enjoy concessions. The Commission did approve rezoning the parcel of land the course would sit on to planned development.

Besides the chicken ordinance and mini-golf rezoning:

  • The Commission also approved the building of a detached garage for properties located at 1415 East 20th Street & 1500 Green Acres Drive;
  • Approved the Marshfield School District to construct pickleball courts and restrooms on the high school property located at 1401 East Becker Road;
  • Approved Boson Construction to build an addition for Sacred Heart at 1011 South Central Avenue;
  • And finally the City of Marshfield to rezone the property located at 1901 South Central Avenue to “PUD Planned Unit Development”.

This parcel was recently improperly rezoned to “Community Mixed Use- Planned Unit Development” instead of the intended zoning district. Keep in mind that with all these approvals, they were simply moved forward to the Marshfield Common Council for final approval.
