OPENING WEEKEND IN THE BOOKS
Monday, November 19th, 2007 -- 10:42 AM
Department of Natural Resources wardens say the opening weekend for the gun deer season was a successful one.The cool weather and the fact deer are still mating helped hunters. Less wind and more snow would have been nice, but warden Mike Young in Outagamie County says the weekend was 1 of the better openings he's seen in his 20 years on the job.
Here in Neillsville, there were 1,224 deer registered at Mary's Mobil Mart, the busiest registration station in town.
Because it's cooler, hunters didn't have to rush from the woods to register their deer.
The DNR says nearly 630,000 hunters have licenses for the 9-day gun season.
