Man Accused of Killing Wisconsin Rapids Man Wants to Represent Himself

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) The man accused of killing Benny Scruggs in 1985 has been ordered to undergo a competency examination as he faces murder charges.

Donald Maier appeared in court on Wednesday, where he made a request to move forward as his own representative. Attorney Timothy Hogan, who has been representing Maier, said he was unaware of Maier’s desire to relieve him of his duties.

A judge then ordered a competency examination for the 60-year-old before any further action is taken. Maier is accused of stabbing Scruggs in his Wisconsin Rapids home while he was having an affair with Scruggs' wife.

He's currently serving a prison sentence on an unrelated stalking charge. No further court action has been set, the case will need to be tried under Wisconsin's 1985 murder laws.
