(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says he's hoping that increased state shared revenue will help communities.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says he's hoping that increased state shared revenue will help communities. Speaking on WISN's UPFRONT, Vos says restrictions that Republicans are putting on the funding are common sense.
"I don't want it to be used to expand some brand new service, as opposed to making sure the core services all across the state of Wisconsin are maintained and hopefully improved."
Vos also said he wants to get new abortion legislation on the table ahead of a possible State Supreme Court ruling on Wisconsin's current ban. Vos says that Democrats are pushing too hard for legalization.
"They're attempting to overturn any kind of a reasonable restriction, it would go back to something from the 1980s actually pre roe for some of the restrictions that have happened."
Vos says a proposed reform to the state’s shared revenue formula will still require the city of Milwaukee to resolve its own budget problems. Vos noted the city will have to either make cuts or ask voters to raise their own taxes. "The only way is some additional revenue. [It] shouldn't come from people who don't live in Milwaukee, it's not our problem."
The proposed increase in shared revenue from Assembly Republicans would restrict that spending to mostly emergency services. Vos says he doesn't want to see cities creating new programs with the new state funding.
