COMMITTEE TO REHASH HOUR REDUCTION PLAN

Thursday, November 1st, 2007 -- 12:30 PM

Clark County employees may not see their hours reduced afterall.

The state budget signed into law by Governor Jim Doyle had some unexpected provisions. One of those may prompt the county's finance committee to rethink their proposed budget that proposes cutting a fulltime workweek from 40 hours down to 38 ? hours.

That move was expected to save the county between $500,000 and $600,000.

But the new budget loosens the 2% tax levy limit. According to Terri Domaszek, County Finance Manager, the budget calls for a 3.86% levy limit this year. That means the county could raise $244,000 more property taxes than budgeted.

If they don't take advantage of the 1.86% increase, they'll in essence be penalized next year, when the limit goes back to 2%.

The finance committee is scheduled to meet again on Tuesday. The entire county board will have a chance to make changes during the November 13 budget hearing.
