Wisconsin's State Superintendent Pitches More K-12 Funding and Increases in Revenue Caps

(Bob Hague, WRN) Voters in numerous Wisconsin school districts will consider funding referendums today.
State Superintendent Jill Underly says that’s a consequence of state imposed revenue limits. “These revenue limits were set back in 1993. And the only way school districts have been able to increase them outside of action from the legislature is through referendum. So when you see more referendum getting passed it's because there's a problem.”
Underly says Wisconsin’s K-12 schools need to have state imposed revenue limits increased, as well as an increase in state funding. “So we have to do both. We have to increase the revenue limits and we have to also increase the general aid. So the amount of money that is in public education in the state. Because in order to have an impact we have to do both.”
Governor Tony Evers' has proposed an additional $2.6 billion for K-12 schools in his state budget, as well as raising revenue limits on local taxpayers. Underlie said Monday that some Wisconsin school districts are facing a “funding cliff.”
