FRAUD SUSPECT FOUND, LET GO

Monday, October 8th, 2007 -- 12:31 PM

A Marshfield travel agent under investigation for fraud has been found, but authorities let her go.

The public might wonder why Marcia Meshak, 42, wasn't arrested after she was involved in a traffic crash in Colorado.

Afterall, she's under investigation after over 50 people came forward since her disappearance claiming she failed to make nearly $180,000 of travel arrangements.

"Our interest, primarily, was to make sure she was o.k.," explains Marshfield Police Chief Joe Stroik. "We would like to talk with her, however, at this point, we have no basis to place her in custody. Therefore, she's free to leave."

While she's a person of interest in the case, Stroik says they don't have "probable cause" to charge her.

"All we have, essentially, are allegations by victims, concerns by victims," Stroik notes. "Once we have (probable cause), we can file our information with the District Attorney's Office and we can work toward obtaining an arrest warrant for Marcia."
Stroik says investigators hope to interview her in the "near future."

It is unclear if she has plans to return to Marshfield, but authorities are confident she won't be able to elude authorities if charges are brought.

"Saying it delicately, we are unsure of her status at this point, but we have some ideas."

"We know where she is."

Stroik says the Police Department has the "authority" to keep track of Meshak's whereabouts, but will not say how they would do so.
