Wausau Student Brings Stun Gun to School

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) A ten year old Wausau student is being referred to the county juvenile justice system after they were found to have a stun gun at Jefferson Elementary on Wednesday.
According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Wausau Police Lieutenant Nathan Cihlar says no students were threatened, and the device wasn't used, but the student still violated state law. "Statutes define what a dangerous weapon is. And that includes many things outside of a firearm and is a higher standard then what you can carry out in the community."
He hopes the incident also prompts parents to have a discussion with their students about what is and isn't OK to bring to school. "Really just make sure that they encourage and reinforce with their kids that there are legal consequences for bringing items like that to school."
He credits another student at the school with notifying staff about the item. "We certainly encourage students to have good relationships with staff and that their information will be taken seriously." He says the item in question would be considered a personal defense device. "They deliver an electric charge to that point of contact."
The student, who was not identified, will face punishment from the district. Additional consequences could come from the Department of Social Services.
