(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Before you sign on the dotted line on a gym contract this New Year, be sure you know what you're signing up for.
A New Year means a new you, which could mean joining a gym this winter. But State Consumer Protection director Mike Domke says it's essential to do your research before signing any contract.
"Look at the fine print on what their agreements are, what their particular promotion is, you know, understand the cancellation policy. So if we get to June, you find out you're not going do you have an opportunity to cancel it."
Domke says it's important to give a gym a trial run or two before signing a full contract, something most reliable gyms will offer. "You don't want to pay and end up at a gym where you do a few exercises or workouts and realize this isn't for me. And so understanding what your goals are and then finding a facility that matches that."
Domke says it's vital to read the fine print before you sign any contract. "Is there an initial signup fee? What is the monthly fee? What is the cancellation? What is the term? All of these are going to be really important in case you find out that something happens that you don't want to go anymore, or he finally is not the right fit."
Domke says you should make sure to get a tour of the facility and do a test run or two to make sure it's what you're looking for as well.
