Cash Bail Amendment Advances Out of State Senate Committee
Friday, January 13th, 2023 -- 9:15 AM
(Raymond Neupert, WRN) State Senate Republicans are moving forward with a plan to change the state constitution to allow for stricter cash bail guidelines.
That amendment would allow judges to consider the danger to the public and other factors when deciding bail, rather than just what it will take to get a defendant back to court. That was approved in the Senate's public safety committee on a 5 to 3 vote.
Democrats like Madison's Kelda Roys say that's not going to help the system, and will only ensure that more poor people remain in jail while rich defendants remain free. If the resolution passes both chambers, it will head to voters for a referendum to change the constitution.
