Wisconsin Elections Commission Sees no Major Issues in Petitions for Judge Seats for Spring Elections

Wednesday, January 11th, 2023 -- 10:01 AM

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) It appears to be smooth sailing for the spring elections, according to the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

It appears to be smooth sailing for the spring elections, according to the Wisconsin Elections Commission. Elections specialist Riley Willman tells commissioners that staff didn't see any major issues with the circulation of elections petitions for the spring elections.

However, several of those forms appeared to be prefilled by the person circulating the paper. "Had staff broken with tradition, and struck those signatures, all candidates would still have the statutorily required number of signatures, so would not impact their ballot status."

Willman says the commission did have some concerns with a few signatures, but that it wasn't enough to disqualify anyone from their race. "We have noticed that some candidates have had circulators who it appear that they pre-fill in information on the petition. However, we are not handwriting experts. We simply are looking at this and seeing that it appears that it is the same handwriting."

Willman says that even if they dropped those petitions, no one would be disqualified for lack of signatures. 72 candidates are now in the running to fill 53 judges' seats.
