(Raymond Neupert, WRN) If you're looking for a good charity for your end-of-the-year donations, make sure you're doing your homework.
If you're setting up your end-of-the-year donations, make sure you're working with a reliable charity. State consumer protection director Michael Domke says it's important to work with charities you trust and find out more about them.
"We want to make sure that they understand who is calling them and what their purpose is, we want them to ask a couple of questions to find out where that money goes."
Domke says you shouldn't be handing over your money to random charities you find on social media. "You can try and go directly to that particular organization's website. If they have one and find out a little bit more of what their cause is. Sometimes you can find a better understanding of who's on the board where the money goes, things like that."
Domke says there's some excellent resources out there to find out more about the non-profits asking for your donations. "The first is called Charity navigator.org. And that website is directly devoted to identifying specifically what the charity supports, where the money goes."
You can also use the website Gov dot Org, which lays out similar information.
