WEATHER HARD ON CRANBERRIES
Friday, August 25th, 2006 -- 2:11 PM
Cranberry growers in Jackson and Monroe counties hope the recent hail storms don?t "bog" them down too much, but one grower estimates up to 60-percent of their berries were knocked off the vine during storms on Wednesday and Thursday.Jim VanWychen has a bog about 4? miles east of Warrens. He says they?ll be checking the sugar content of the berries ? if it?s high enough for processing for juice, they?ll have to flood the beds earlier than usual to salvage the knocked-off berries.
Van Whychen says this is only the 2nd time in 34 years that hail has caused this much damage.
