DROUGHT, HOT SPELL BLAMED FOR FISH DIE-OFF
Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006 -- 8:53 AM
Low oxygen levels are blamed for a massive fish die-off at Chapman Lake in Stanley. The heat wave and lack of rain conspired to stress the large mouth bass, blue gills, northern pike and bullheads.
A clean-up of the smelly problem is expected to begin Wednesday.
The City plans to work on the Chapman Lake dam next year and officials may choose not to restock the lake.
Long Lake near Trempealeau is experiencing the same problem. Plants, algae and hundreds of floating dead fish choked the narrow river backwater yesterday.
