Wisconsin Pubic Service and WE Energies Warn Residents of Utility Scammers

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) -Wisconsin Public Service and WE Energies are working with law enforcement throughout the state to remind customers to keep their guard up against scammers who may demand payment while threatening to turn off your service immediately.
"Demanding immediate payment using prepaid cards or third party apps, like Zeal or Venmo, those are tactics that WPS does not use. We do not conduct business in a threatening manner."
He says the tried-and-true way to protect yourself is to hang up immediately and call WPS directly at the number listed on your monthly bill or their website. "It's not rude, it's safe. So, again, the best step customers can take is to reach out to us. We can verify the status of their account and we can also discuss with them recent payments that have been made on that account."
He says customers can always view their account information on the WPS mobile app or website to make sure their account is in good standing. "Our app is a convient tool for our customers to check on the status of their account. And you can also make payments right from our app to your account as well."
Cullen says they aren't seeing an uptick in any scams right now, but they do want customers to stay aware. Adding they would rather you hang up on a WPS customer service agent and call back instead of falling for a scam.
