Black River Falls Looking to Build All-Abilities Park
Tuesday, October 18th, 2022 -- 12:00 PM
Black River Falls is working on an all-abilities park.
Currently, there are no all-abilities parks within 30 miles of Black River Falls. At the current park, the wood is rotting and many pieces of equipment are in need of updates. The sand is no longer a safe surface for children if they would fall from a piece of equipment. Jackson County is home to roughly 21,000 individuals; 4,000 are children under the age of 18; and 2,000 people have a disability under the age of 65.
An updated city playground would:
- Provide a free, safe place for children to stay active;
- Help develop self-confidence;
- Improve social skills;
- Fight childhood obesity;
- Be a multi-generational activity, allowing parents, grandparents, and other caregivers with disabilities or limited mobility to participate with their children.
The goal is to break ground on new park in 2023. A breakdown in the cost of the project would include:
- $200,000-$250,000 for playground equipment;
- $50,000 for professional installation;
- $180,000 for 7,800 sq.ft. of PIP surfacing;
- $10,000-$30,000 for freight/other charges/permits;
- $25,000-$50,000 for removal/disposal of existing equipment and surfacing;
- $10,000-$30,000 for restoration/landscaping;
- And $50,000 for establishing maintenance fund.
The total budget comes in around $525,000-$675,000.
