DNR IMPOSES NEW BURNING RESTRICTIONS

Friday, July 21st, 2006 -- 10:23 AM

From the DNR:

Despite some recent rainfall, the DNR says the risk of wildfire remains high ? especially in the Northwoods.

As of midnight last night, a new burning ban was put in place for Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, Iron, Price, Rusk, Sawyer, Taylor, and Washburn Counties. The ban also affects parts of Clark, Chippewa, Eau Claire, Burnett, Barron and Polk Counties.

Under the restrictions, burning any combustible material outdoors is prohibited. That applies to burn piles and barrels; all campfires unless in developed areas; smoking any cigars, cigarettes or pipes, except within a vehicle or building; disposing any matches, ashes, charcoal briquettes, or any burning materials into the outdoor; and all fireworks, legal or otherwise.

Fire officials say local restrictions may also apply, and you should contact your local fire warden before doing any burning.
Since the beginning of the month, DNR firefighters have responded to nearly 200 wildfires.
