Miami Man Arrested for Scamming Marshfield Woman Appears in Marathon County Court

A Miami man appeared in Marathon County Court for scamming a Marshfield woman out of nearly $50,000.

Back in May, an elderly woman stated she had received a call from someone stating they were from the Marshfield Police Department. The individual told the woman that her granddaughter had caused an accident and she was in jail. The elderly woman was told she’d have to pay $40,000 plus $7,000 in processing fees.

The woman agreed to pay the money and a man came and picked it up. The elderly woman then received another phone call stating that the woman her granddaughter had hit was pregnant and miscarried, so she needed to pay another $100,000 for a civil suit. Eventually the woman called her granddaughter and discovered the whole thing was a scam.

The man who had picked up the money, Alejandro Garcia, was arrested for the scam when attempted to come back and claim the $100,000. Authorities believe Garcia was involved in other scams involving the elderly within that time frame.

Garcia is facing charges of theft through false representation and attempted theft by false representation. During his arraignment on Monday, he entered a not guilty plea to the charges against him.
