SENIORS, FARMERS' MARKETS A GOOD COMBINATION

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006 -- 8:15 AM

Maybe it?s because seniors need to eat their vegetables, too, but the Senior Farmers? Market program has become extremely popular in Clark County.

?Clark County has just 75 vouchers available,? according to Mary Sladich of the Clark County Office on Aging and Nutrition. ?They are $30 in vouchers in $2 and $3 increments.?

The vouchers, which are granted based on income eligibility, can be used to purchase Wisconsin-grown produce from certified vendors.

Clark County has been involved in the program for the past three years. This year, all the vouchers are taken and there?s a waiting list in the hope that the USDA might release more, Sladich says.

?It?s a great opportunity to help improve their nutritional well-being by being able to by affordable fresh produce. It also helps the local growers,? Sladich says.

Certified vendors are denoted by a yellow sign reading ?Wisconsin Farmers? Market Program?. Vendors can get certified with the help of the UW-Extension office.
