Wausau Mayor Discusses New Granular Activated Carbon Filtration System
Monday, October 10th, 2022 -- 8:00 AM
(Mike Leischner, WSAU) -Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg says it's still too soon to tell what impact a granular activated carbon filtration system in Wausau's new drinking water plant will cost users.
According to Mike Leischner of WSAU, the mayor stated the utility is still working to secure funding through various loan and grant programs. She says the ideal course of action would have been to take PFAS into account from the start, but that didn't happen when the project was planned.
She says so far there hasn't been much appetite for putting the instillation off for a few years, but she would welcome the discussion. She says if the changes combined with new regulations from the state do result in a significant increase they could consider a move to monthly billing instead of quarterly.
She says to expect some discussion from the city's finance committee before any final decisions are made. Last week the Water Works Commission that implementing new state regulations alone could raise bills to about 109 dollars per quarter, adding the GAC system could add another two to eight dollars to that tab depending on the funding source.
