Clark County Health Department Reminds Residents Flu Season is Coming

With the end of summer and the beginning of fall upon us, it also means the start of flu season.

I spoke with Kelsey Wussow of the Clark County Health Department and she explained the importance of flu vaccines and some upcoming opportunities for individuals to get vaccinated.

"The best way to protect against influenza and its potentially serious complications is with a flu vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recommends routine annual influenza vaccinations for everyone age 6 months and older who do not have any contraindications, ideally by the end of October."

"Flu vaccination is especially important for people 65 years and older because they are at higher risk of developing serious flu complications. It is the mission of the CCHD to promote health, prevent disease, and protect the residents of the county."

"Therefore, the CCHD will once again be offering flu vaccine clinics for adults, throughout Clark  County. There will be three flu clinics, each starting at 9 AM and running until 12 PM."

"The first flu clinic will be held on Wednesday, October 12th in Thorp, at the Fire Station. The second flu clinic will be held on Thursday, October 13th in Neillsville, at the American  Legion. The third flu clinic will be held on Friday, October 14th in Colby, at the Community Library." 

"We will be offering the standard-dose, quadrivalent vaccine for individuals 18 and older, as well as the high-dose quadrivalent vaccine, for individuals age 65 and older."

"The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (or ACIP) has made a preferential recommendation for the 2022-23 influenza season, stating, adults age 65 and older should receive the high-dose flu vaccine, as data supports that the high-dose flu vaccine provides better protection against influenza for this age group, compared to a standard-dose flu vaccine."

"If you are unsure on what type of flu shot you should receive, we would encourage you to talk with your primary healthcare provider to make a shared decision. This year, we will not be taking appointments and there is no need to complete a consent form  ahead of time."

"Consent forms will be completed with a nurse on-site. Individuals will be served  in order, as they present. Please be sure to have your insurance cards with you, when arriving to the vaccine clinic."

"We accept Medicare, Advocare, Medicaid/BadgerCare+, Security Health Plan, Security  Administrative Services, and UMR insurance plans. We also have a private pay option."

"The cost of the standard-dose flu vaccine for those paying out of pocket is $40.00. The cost of the  high-dose flu vaccine is $88.00. Acceptable forms of payment include cash or check. It is our hope that these flu clinics provide a convenient, accessible, and an enjoyable experience."
