Wisconsin's Growing Season Coming to an End

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) Farmers in some parts of Wisconsin are nearing the end of their growing season as frost has been reported in patchy areas up north.

According to the Wisconsin ag Connection, that's according to the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, the remainder of the state saw dry and warmer conditions last week. The weekly crop report also noted that corn for grain has been harvested in southern counties.

Topsoil moisture condition levels were rated one percent very short, 10 percent short, 79 percent adequate and 10 percent surplus. As of Sunday, 87 percent of the corn had reached the dent stage. That's nine days behind last year, but two days better than average.

Forty-two percent of the crop was listed as 'mature,' which is also slightly behind the same time last year. Farmers who chop their corn for silage had just over a third of their fields completed. The condition of the crop is 78 percent good to excellent.

All but 10 percent of the soybeans were coloring statewide, six days behind last year, but three days ahead of normal. Soybeans dropping leaves was at 54 percent. Soybean condition was 77 percent good to excellent, even with last week.

Winter wheat planting is 39 percent complete, with 23 percent emerged. About 89 percent of the fourth hay crop is harvested. And farmers already have eight percent of the fall tillage wrapped up, which is close to normal for late September.
