Wisconsin Ranks 8th in Nation for Rates of Women Murdered by Men

Monday, September 26th, 2022 -- 1:00 PM

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) A new study places Wisconsin as 8th in the nation for the rates where women are killed by men.

Wisconsin ranks number 8 in the country for rates of women murdered by men according to a new study by the Violence Policy Center. Kristen Rand with V P C says the idea that most women are killed by strangers is a definite myth.

"Specifically in Wisconsin in this study, we found 81% of female victims were killed by someone that they knew. And even more troubling is 53% of those were killed by intimate partners."

Rand says communities that don't respect women often see higher rates of violence. "Women sort of historically being treated as second-class citizens, and not a lot of focus on the problem of domestic violence, that those factors really do play a large role in driving up homicide rates against women."

Rand says these numbers can be brought down, but that serious change needs to be made to support women. "It's really got to start at the community level and then be supported by policymakers who see the importance of making sure that these advocates have the resources that they need and they look carefully at the issue of firearms access."

The study shows that most women are killed by a man that they know, who is likely an intimate or domestic partner. Sixty women were killed in Wisconsin in 2020.
