Tuesday, July 11th, 2006 -- 8:36 AM
Two prison escapees considered "armed and dangerous" and wanted in several states have been captured in Monroe County after leading police on a chase.Monroe County sheriff officials say Truman Gross and Benjamin Beck were taken into custody shortly after one a-m near Tomah.
Sheriff Pete Quirin says deputies laid down road spikes which flattened the tires of the stolen car the two were driving.
Quirin says the fugitives ended up in the ditch, but kept driving, so officers rammed their vehicle.
Law enforcement agencies were notified earlier that the two were suspected of robbing a family in Preston, Minnesota at gunpoint and stealing their car.
The sheriff says a Sparta police officer spotted the stolen vehicle on Interstate 90 and a chase began.
The fugitives escaped from the Lexington, Oklahoma Correctional Center July second. They're accused of stealing cash, credit cards and a car at gunpoint from a couple they tied up in Bella Vista, Arkansas. That couple's vehicle was recovered at the Preston, Minnesota residence.
