COUNTY BOARD MEMBER WANTS PUBLIC COMMENTS

Friday, July 7th, 2006 -- 9:44 AM

A Clark County Board supervisor says he?s drawing on personal experience as he attempts to allow the public a chance to speak at Board meetings.

"I was not allowed to speak in some of the committee meetings," Elmhorst laments.

When the Board meets next Thursday, they will entertain Elmhorst-authored Resolution 25-7-06, which would amend current rules to create a public comment period on the agenda of each Board meeting.

The Resolution would give ?any person not a member, desirous of speaking to the Board, not less than three minutes at each meeting?.

"This is something Clark County hasn't had. A lot of other counties and Towns have this - I think even a lot of your school boards have this," Elmhorst explains. "For some reason, Clark County seems like they were shutting out the Public."

Clark County Corporation Counsell Frank Vasquez says the Board hasn?t had a public comment time since he started back in 1990; he was unsure if the county has ever allowed such a time.

Elmhorst?s proposed amendment would also allow members of the public to speak during regular agenda items if requested by a board member. If an objection arises, the person could speak if a majority of the County Board ? not two-thirds ? approves.

The Board meets next Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
