JACKSON CO. TO HONOR OFFICERS

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006 -- 10:29 AM

It?s an incident no one wants to see repeated, but law enforcement officials in Jackson County will be honoring four deputies for their response to an emergency in Clark County in which a man brandishing and firing a weapon was shot and killed.

A review by the State Department of Justice found officers were justified in using lethal force when they shot the Hatfield area man on November 29th.

Lt. Patrick LaBarbera says Lt. Robert Staple III, Det. Scott Bove, Det. Duane Waldera and Dep. Timothy Nichols will receive the Department?s Medal of Valor at a ceremony Tuesday.

?The Medal of Valor is the highest award that can be credited to a law enforcement officer in this department,? LaBarbera explains.

While the officer who fired the lethal shot was placed on administrative leave during the standard investigation into the shooting, LaBarbera says none of the other officers missed time as a result ? though it was traumatic for all involved.

?Initially, it has a great impact. That impact stays with the deputy for a long time; it?s not easily forgotten,? LaBarbera says. ?Our people have handled the situation rather well. I?m sure it?s still vivid in each of their minds.?
