RACE ACROSS AMERICA UPDATE
Thursday, June 15th, 2006 -- 10:56 AM
This is an animated map produced by Race Across America. Tom's Team will be denoted by an orange square when the race spreads out:Tom and Tim have finished the most difficult section of the race now.
At 5:45 a.m., the duo pulled into their latest checkpoint in Trinidad, Colorado. While the section actually sees a major drop in elevation from start to finish, the first 15 miles are a killer.
Racers climb from 7,000-feet to 10,000-feet, reaching the highest point in the course.
Team Volae Wolf Pack toughed it out, but, as expected, they turned in their slowest split of the course so far, averaging just over 13 mph over the 60-miles section.
The good news: flatland - and faster splits - are ahead.
The Team is still averaging just under 18 mph - a pace that will likely increase over the next few days.
They only have two more Colorado time stations, then it's on to Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio... etc.
The 3,000-mile Race Across America finishes in Atlantic City, NJ.
