'FINISH LINE' EVENT COMING TO NEILLSVILLE
Wednesday, June 14th, 2006 -- 2:31 PM
Who knew fighting cancer could be this fun?Suzanne Roehl began organizing the American Cancer Society?s Relay for Life twelve years ago. The past few years, she?s organized the more participant friendly Finish Line event.
?The Finish Line is the same concept as the Relay, but we're a smaller group of people and it's a shorter event: we start at 5 p.m. and we're done by 10,? Roehl explains.
Organizers hope to raise $25,000 this Friday.
?There?s a common misconception that this money goes away and never comes back,? says the American Cancer Society?s Kaysie Olson. ?Research dollars will go to our national and state level, but that comes back to help everyone in the community in one way or the other.?
Mammography and other affective cancer screenings were developed with the help of American Cancer Society fundraising, Olson says.
Aside from walking, the Finish Line will feature plenty of fun at the Neillsville High School track. The Dude Looks Like a Lady Contest, Macho Woman Contest and Water Balloon Relay will keep people on their toes; but the mood will be more somber at 10 p.m. during the Luminaria Ceremony.
?We light a small bag that has a candle in it. On the bag are messages about or for cancer survivors,? Roehl says.
The public is invited to attend the Finish Line; registration begins Friday at 5 p.m. at the Gazebo.
