OUT OF THE FRYING PAN, INTO THE FIRE

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006 -- 1:54 PM

A man found ?not guilty? of killing his mother in Chippewa County is now linked to a double homicide in Florida.

Investigators say DNA evidence found on a knife in his Wisconsin murder case now links Bill Marquardt to a double murder in Florida that occurred in 2000.

Chippewa County D.A. Jon Theisen says the knife was tested early on, and two unknown blood samples were found.

Those samples matched two people, Esperanza Wells and Margarita Ruiz. The mother and daughter were found shot to death and stabbed in their Sumter County, Florida home in March of 2000.

Investigators believe Marquardt was running drugs when he randomly killed the women.

Marquardt is currently held in a Wisconsin mental institution, where he refused to speak to detectives.
