Last Week Had Ideal Conditions for Wisconsin Farmers to Make Hay

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) A hot and mostly dry week led to ideal conditions for making hay during the past week, according to the Wisconsin Ag Connection.

But reporters across the state noted more precipitation would be welcome as soils have become drier. According to the latest crop/weather report from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, topsoil moisture level conditions were rated three percent very short, 17 percent short, 77 percent adequate and three percent surplus.

As of Sunday, all but five percent of the corn crop was emerged statewide, with 78 percent of the fields rated as good to excellent. That was down four percentage points from last week.

About ninety-three percent of the soybeans were emerged, which is 12 days behind last year, but two days ahead of the five-year average. Soybean condition was 77 percent good to excellent, also four percentage points behind a week ago.

More than a third of the oats have headed across Wisconsin and five percent showed signs of coloring. Winter wheat was 89 percent headed and 28 percent coloring. And the first cutting of alfalfa was reported at 93 percent complete, with 13 percent of the second crop mowed.

The all hay condition was reported 82 percent good to excellent condition.
