Local Areas to Receive Broadband Expansion Grants from the Wisconsin Public Service Commission

On Thursday, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin awarded funding from the state’s Broadband Expansion Grant Program.

The Commission awarded $124,967,392 for 71 projects that will expand broadband internet to more than 82,912 residential and 4566 business locations currently unserved or underserved. The projects receiving awards will impact 45 counties. The grant awards will leverage $185,780,074 of matching funds from recipients.

The broadband expansion grants invest in construction projects for internet service in areas of the state that are challenging to connect due to population density or geography. Since 2014, 434 grants have been awarded through the grant program from state and federal funding to projects impacting 71 counties.

Some recipients of the grant include $2,270,000 for Bug Tussel Wireless for Clark County. This project will build a 190-mile fiber ring in Clark County, connecting 227 business and 4,304 residential locations and 2,283 unserved locations.

Another is for $4,293,662 to Frontier North for Clark, Lincoln, and Marathon Counties. This project will utilize a Fiber to the Premise service to reach 812 business, 9,884 residential locations in Marathon County, and 10,044 unserved locations.

Another is $1,690,306 for Frontier North for rural Colby and Marshfield. This project will utilize a Fiber to the Premise service to 137 business and 491 residential locations in the Marshfield telephone exchange in Clark and Wood counties and 619 unserved locations.

Also, $2 million for Bug Tussel in Wood County. This project will build a 139.1-mile fiber ring in Wood County connecting 113 business, 2,141 residential locations, and 1,675 unserved locations

Also, $1,761,461 for Bug Tussel Wireless in Jackson County. This project will build a 153.3-mile fiber ring in Jackson connecting 131 business and 2,488 residential locations and 1,976 unserved locations.

Another for $877,200 for Bug Tussel Wireless in Taylor County. This project will build a 76.2-mile fiber ring in Taylor County connecting 34 business and 653 residential locations and 687 unserved locations.

Another for $3 million for Bug Tussel Wireless in Marathon County. This project will build a 90.7-mile fiber route in Marathon connecting 16 business and 636 residential locations and 652 unserved locations.
