Wisconsin Farmers in Good Shape as they Wrap Up Spring Planting Activity

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) With 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork during the past week, Wisconsin farmers continue to be in good shape as they wrap up their spring planting activity.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, that's according to the latest crop/weather report by the state's agriculture department, which stated most farmers were busy cutting hay and spraying the fields for weed control.

Topsoil moisture condition levels were rated one percent very short, 10 percent short, 81 percent adequate and eight percent surplus. Corn and soybean planting were both at 97 percent complete, which was slightly behind average for corn, but ahead of normal for soybeans.

As of Sunday, 92 percent of the corn was emerged and 89 percent of the beans had sprouted. Ninety percent of the oats were emerged statewide. That's three weeks behind last year and more than a week slower than average.

About 16 percent of oats had headed and 82 percent of the crop was rated as good to excellent. Winter wheat was 75 percent headed, about nine days behind last year, but even with the five-year average. Seven percent was coloring, with the crop 85 percent good to excellent.

And the first cutting of alfalfa was reported at 84 percent complete, a full week behind the 2021 progress mark and one day behind average. Second crop is one percent cut already and looking to be 82 percent good to excellent condition.
