Watch for Deer on Wisconsin's Roadways

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) "Watch For Deer" isn't just a parting sentiment this time of year.
DOT spokesman Dave Pabst says deer are more active in the early summer as yearlings start to leave their mothers. "People don't expect the deer to be as active as they are and so we tend to have more injuries during this time of month when they hit a deer than in the fall when people are more aware and are being extra careful."
If you ARE going to hit a deer, Spokesman Dave Pabst says don't swerve. "It's always better to hit a deer than to hit another car or to leave the roadway and roll over. Rollovers are one of the most violent crashes that exist."
Pabst says deer are most active this time of year, especially in the early mornings and evenings. "No matter when you're driving, but especially during May and June when you have deer to deal with, and then in the fall, and October, November, One of the best defenses is to put your phone down, buckle up, and pay attention to what you're doing."
Pabst says that people need to watch the roads and put down their phones, and always wear their seatbelts.
