Wisconsin Farmers Continue to Make Progress in the Fields

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) The weather continued to be favorable as farmers wrapped up their spring planting and went straight to the hay fields during the past week.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture's weekly crop report stated that topsoil moisture condition levels were rated one percent very short, nine percent short, 79 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus.

As of Sunday, all but six percent of the spring tillage was complete, which is close to average for the week after Memorial Day, but three weeks behind last year's progress. Farmers have 89 percent of the corn planted, with 73 percent of the crop emerging. Reporters say the corn condition was 84 percent good to excellent statewide.

Soybean planting was 86 percent complete, which is 10 days behind last year, but five days ahead of normal. Fifty-eight percent of the beans have sprouted and 81 percent are looking good to excellent.

About 19 percent of the winter wheat was headed and 86 percent considered good to excellent. And the first cutting of alfalfa was reported at 51 percent complete, just a day behind last year, but one day ahead of the five-year average.
