(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Before you or your pets jump into your favorite pond or lake this summer, be sure the water is safe to swim in.

Public Health Madison Dane County spokesperson Morgan Finke said that's because blue-green algae blooms can seriously sicken you or your dog. "A reddish-purple or brown color. But just looking for that murky water, that looks like the water has kind of a scummy layer."

Finke continued, "Almost the appearance of pea soup, you know that texture consistency. If there is blue green algae present, you are able to see that right at the surface of the water."

Finke also said, "You want to avoid a trip to the emergency room or the emergency vet with your dog. Because it's really more likely that your dog is gonna get sick than you."

Finke says you should always check with your local health department to see if warnings have been posted and be sure to report any algae blooms you spot while out on the water.
