Wisconsin Democrats Demand Republicans Act on Gun Safety

Friday, June 3rd, 2022 -- 10:01 AM

(Bob Hague, WRN) At the Capitol, Democrats demand Republicans act on gun safety.

The Democrats want to pass measures like Universal Background Checks on all firearm purchases and Extreme Risk Protection, or “Red Flag” Orders. Senator LaTonya Johnson of Milwaukee, “It’s time we demand my colleagues to do their job.” Madison Senator Melissa Agard, “When you have elected officials who are failing to act, it’s a dereliction of duty. They need to be escorted out.”

Senator LaTonya Johnson of Milwaukee says calling for more cops is not enough. “We are asking police officers to protect the lives of everyday citizens by risking their lives. Because our legislative body, my Republican colleagues, are unwilling to do what’s necessary to help alleviate some of the guns on the street, and that’s unacceptable.”

Senator Agard of Madison continued, “What we need to prevent is the guns in the hands of people who are danger to themselves and a danger to our communities. We absolutely want our schools to be more safe, but it’s not by eliminating the number of doors. It’s not . . . bringing more armed people around a school.”

Democrats are asking for Universal Background Checks on all firearm purchases and Extreme Risk Protection, or “Red Flag” Orders. Those measures were part of a special session called by Governor Tony Evers in 2019, which Republicans did not act on.
