Wausau School Board Backs Off on Sex Ed Curriculum Changes

(Terry Bell, WRN) The Wausau school board has backed off on changes to the district’s sex education curriculum.
Parents came to Monday night’s school board meeting to oppose what they heard may be a change to an abstinence-only approach to sex ed. Superintendent Keith Hilts says the only change in Wausau schools is the addition of a state-required lesson on dropping unwanted babies off at fire stations.
He says Wausau schools will continue to teach about sex and reproduction, including birth control. Hilts says he and the board heard the public's message loud and clear at Monday’s board meeting. “Our interests were consistent with the audience’s interests, so there’s really no need for any conflict on this.”
Hilts said the confusion may have stemmed from the district's consultants, who reworked the policy in part to comply with a new state law.
