Consider Native Wisconsin Flowers When Planting this Season

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) While you're putting together a plan for your yard and flowers this season, consider planting native Wisconsin flowers.
Susan Carpenter from the UW-Madison Arboretum says that while some communities still consider native plants to be out of code, you can find places for them. "But if you have a flower bed and you're putting native plants in there, it's going to look pretty, it's going to be attractive to the animals into the pollinators and so forth."
Carpenter says even small patches of native plants in your yard can improve the condition of your surroundings and bring in more life. "A lot more birds, a lot more spiders, a lot more bumblebees, a lot more pollinators, butterflies and so forth coming in."
Carpenter says that there are plenty of plants to pick from that suit your particular yard. "If I have a shady yard, I'm going to be using more woodland plants. And if I have a bright, open sunny yard, I'll be using probably prairie plants and maybe something in between, I'll use Savanna plants."
You can find local sources for native plants by contacting your local UW-Extension office.
