Barb Lawton spent Thursday night at Tuft?s Mansion Bed and Breakfast here in Neillsville, she gave a speech to Neillsville students Friday morning and then rushed to Thorp where she took part in dedication ceremonies for the Clark County segment of the Yellowstone Trail ? a driving route that travels from the east coast to the west coast, and now cuts through Curtiss, Withee, Owen and Thorp.
In Neillsville, Ms. Lawton was welcomed by the High School band playing ?On Wisconsin?. She told 11th and 12th grade students and some area leaders that she was raised in a rural area and appreciates the place rural culture has in our state.
?Few people today really understand the rhythm of rural life,? Lawton said. ?It?s very much a part of the definition of who we are in the state of Wisconsin. It defines the ethic ? the way we meet the world ? in our families and communities.?
Lawton said she was impressed with what our area has to offer.
?I am so impressed,? Lawton raved. She noted Clark County?s forestland, recreation trails, historic landmarks and Neillsville?s nine city-owned parks.
?And, of course, you can?t overlook Chatty Belle,? Lawton joked.
She encouraged students to get involved in politics and make sure their voices were heard in local government.
