RABIES VACCINES AND MICROCHIPS

Friday, May 5th, 2006 -- 3:01 PM

Area pet owners can get their pets vaccinated and micro-chipped during a clinic Saturday (May 6th) in Neillsville.

The Clark County Humane Society is teaming up with Grassland Veterinary Service to offer the clinic at the Clark County Fairgrounds from noon until 2 p.m.

Wendy Lindner with Grassland says state law requires rabies vaccines.

?Dogs that are at least four months of age are required to have a rabies vaccine before they are six months old,? Lindner says. ?If they are puppies and it's a first-time vaccination, it's good for one year; and if they've had a vaccination in the past, it's good for three years.?

In addition to the rabies vaccine, distemper shots will be available for cats and dogs and Lyme?s Disease vaccine will be available for dogs.

The vets will also implant microchips ? the latest craze in pet identification.

?It?s a little, tiny chip that?s implanted between their shoulder blades and it's read with scanners,? Lindner says. ?Almost all Humane Societies and veterinary clinics have scanners so the animals can be identified and their owner can be found.?

There are fees for the services with half the proceeds going to the Clark County Humane Society. Lindner says people should make sure their dogs are on a leash and their cats are in a traveling device ? and don?t be surprised if you have to spend some time in line today.
