New Big-Box Stores Coming to the Marshfield Mall

(Melissa Siegler, Marshfield News-Herald) Residents will soon have new shopping options at the site of the Marshfield Mall.

Ned Brickman, president of Midland Management, the company that co-owns the mall, told the Marshfield Common Council Tuesday night that a new plan for the site involves adding several new big-box stores.

Brickman said that a few stores have already committed to the project, although he did not disclose the names of the stores. The new plan would largely use the existing structure for the new stores, which would each have its own outdoor entrance. Plans also include space for the current tenants of the mall, a new parking lot and possibly a few fast-casual restaurants on the property.

The mall currently houses larger chain stores such as Kohl's, Ashley HomeStore, Claire's and Bath & Body Works as well as smaller businesses such as Sports Scene and World Buffet. In 2018, Brickman and Midland Management proposed a plan that would have torn down parts of the mall and replaced it with a strip mall.

Amid the online shopping boom, retailers weren't willing to risk opening new stores, Brickman said, so they had difficulty getting people to commit to the property. Now, there's tremendous interest in the project, he said.

"Here and in lots of places, people have realized that retail is not dead," Brickman said. "People are still wanting to shop, people are still wanting it. Amazon hasn't taken over the world and this is actually still a viable thing for the future."

If everything goes according to plan, they hope to begin construction on the new stores this fall, Brickman said. When the project is finished, the site will be a "brand new shopping center," he said.
